Can fake freckles be removed with a laser?
Yes, in most cases cosmetic freckles can be removed with a laser, though it is a delicate procedure. These "fake freckles" are created with semi-permanent makeup pigments, frequently iron oxide based, which behave differently from conventional tattoo inks. The outcome depends mainly on how deeply the pigment was deposited and on its composition: shallow pigment generally clears well, while deeper pigment takes more sessions. Because these marks are small and cover little surface area, treating them is often simpler than an extensive area of permanent makeup. A prior medical assessment, including a test on a small area, is essential to evaluate your case and anticipate how the pigment will react.
Can tattooed freckles be completely removed?
Yes, tattooed freckles can be completely removed using a picosecond laser such as Candela’s PicoWay. This laser breaks down pigments into particles small enough to be naturally eliminated by the body. However, results depend on the nature of the pigments and how they have evolved over time. The treatment is gradual and requires multiple sessions. When properly performed, it can restore a natural-looking skin appearance without visible marks or damage.
Why can my tattooed freckles turn black after laser treatment?
This is a phenomenon called pigment shift, which is common with permanent make-up pigments. Flesh, brown and reddish tones contain iron oxide: under the effect of the laser, ferric oxide (rust) is reduced to ferrous oxide, which is black in colour, causing the mark to turn grey or black immediately. Titanium dioxide can also contribute to this. This darkening can be surprising, but it does not mean the treatment has failed: the pigment, now black, then absorbs the laser light very well and can be removed during the following sessions. Individual results vary. This is often a normal step in the process. To anticipate this, a skin therapist always carries out a test on a small area before treating all of the marks.
Is facial tattoo removal safe?
Facial tattoo removal is safe when carried out by a skin therapist, in a professional setting, with a laser suited to the area. Facial skin is thin, reactive and close to the eyes, so this treatment requires precise settings, eye protection and a controlled technique. Carried out under these conditions, with a picosecond laser that limits skin heating and a preliminary patch test, removal of cosmetic freckle-like marks takes place under good safety conditions. The main risk to be aware of is pigment shift, which is managed by the skin therapist and factored into the treatment plan. Individual results vary.
Can I go out after a laser session on my face?
You must avoid exposing your face to UV rays for 15 days following a laser session (at the beach, but also in the street, whenever you are outdoors and exposed to natural light). After that, apply SPF 50 sunscreen to your skin during any sun exposure.
