How does a picosecond laser work?
It is not the laser itself that removes the ink, but rather the body, more specifically the lymphatic system, a natural cleansing network that eliminates what the body no longer needs. These lymphatic vessels are very narrow. The ink particles that make up a tattoo are larger, which is why they remain in the body. To remove them, they must first be broken down—much like a pickaxe gradually breaking apart rock. This “pickaxe” is the laser. It fragments the ink particles into much smaller pieces, allowing the lymphatic system to eliminate them naturally.
How many sessions are needed to remove my tattoo?
The number of sessions needed to remove a tattoo depends on several factors:
- the tattoo itself: its size, its location on the body, the density of the ink, skin pigmentation, the colours it contains
- each customer's profile: their skin type, how their skin reacts, their history, their healing capacity...
This therefore varies considerably from one person to another. During the initial consultation, the skin therapist can give you statistical data on the number of sessions for customers with a profile similar to yours.
Is picosecond laser tattoo removal painful?
The sensation is generally well tolerated, even without local anaesthetic. It is comparable to quick elastic band snaps on the skin, with a transient feeling of warmth. At Ray studios, we use a skin cooling device during the session, which helps reduce immediate discomfort. Treatment time is short — from a few seconds to a few minutes depending on the size of the area. For the most sensitive customers, a medical anaesthetic cream may be prescribed during the initial consultation.
