Are there any exceptions?

There can be, but they are very rare. Some insurers will look at a request for partial or exceptional cover where:

• The tattoo is a traumatic tattoo (for example, pigmented foreign matter left in the skin after an accident or a burn).
• The tattoo is connected to significant psychological distress, supported by ongoing care and a formal assessment.

In those exceptional situations, a request for cover on therapeutic grounds can be sent to your insurer, but it requires strong supporting documentation from your own GP and is not automatically accepted.

What about private health insurance?

Most Irish health insurers do not cover tattoo removal, since it falls outside public health cover. That said:

• Some higher tier or premium policies include "wellbeing" or "aesthetic" benefit allowances that may offer a partial refund.
• It is worth checking directly with your insurer to see whether any contribution is available.
